Education

I am thoroughly trained in adult basic education (ABE) & tutoring through AmeriCorps, Rappahannock Goodwill Industries, and Rappahannock Area Regional Adult Education. I have a BA in English from Mary Washington. I have completed multiple adult literacy tutor workshops and have myself trained tutors in several such workshops.

Experience

I have tutored over a dozen adults over two terms of service (about two years) with AmeriCorps in an adult literacy program, teaching basic skills including reading, writing, English as a second language, and math. Many of my students improved their reading skills by as much as two grade level equivalences in as many months. Over half of my students had a documented learning or other disability, and all of my students faced the unique challenges inherent in learning basic skills as an adult. During the time AmeriCorps funded many training opportunities for me in adult literacy and adult basic education. I taught a semester of a GED class, and the majority of my students passed their test on their first attempt -- an impressive feat, as some entered the class with reading or math grade level equivalences as low as the sixth grade. I know what it's like to struggle with math, as I hated the subject in school. It wasn't until after college that I began to love and understand math - when I taught myself math using the internet. Now I firmly believe that anyone, with almost any set of abilities and challenges, can not only learn math but truly own and enjoy it. I pass on this confidence to my students because I believe in them and train them to essentially teach themselves. Confidence is the best math teacher I know. With reading I take a similar approach. Acquiring literacy as an adult takes grit. I help my students build mastery in the five classic components of literacy - phonics, phonemic awareness, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. As far as English, I scored a perfect 800 on the Verbal section of the SAT and a 790/800 on the SAT Subject Test in Literature, and I have a BA in English from the University of Mary Washington. I am equipped to aid you with essays, research projects, grammar, and literary criticism. I know what test makers and college professors want, and I can help you deliver. Please contact me if you have any questions. If your availability differs from what I have listed, please let me know and I will see if I can accommodate you.
